Our Story – the First 12 Years

Towards the Centre

Therapy in Manchester provides short- and long-term counselling and psychotherapy for adults

I established Therapy in Manchester in 2011

For 8 years I worked from the heart of Chorlton, south Manchester, growing and developing this practice

In 2019 I relocated to the Royal Exchange Building in Manchester’s city centre – also home of the famous Royal Exchange Theatre Company

This relocation and subsequent expansion of Therapy in Manchester allowed me to better serve the therapy needs of adults living or working in Manchester

Becoming a Therapist

Portraits of Paul Melia

Art Historian Paul Melia by David Hockney, 2002; Therapist Paul Melia by Peter Gill, 2018

I entered the world of therapy as a client in 2002

My growing interest in therapy led me to retrain in 2008 after a first career in the Arts

I bring a range of skills from my 20-year career as an Art Historian, occupying increasingly senior positions within UK universities and collaborating on a number of projects with two of the UK’s leading artists, David Hockney and Peter Greenaway

Towards Experience

I began working as a psychotherapist in 2010

I now have over a decade of experience working with a wide range of symptoms and mental health diagnoses

I also draw on two years’ work as a Telephone Counsellor for a leading heath care provider, and two years’ as Therapist for a Manchester-based charity

After qualifying I began ongoing training in the psychoanalysis of Freud and Lacan

Investing in our Professional Community

My colleagues are important to my continuing professional development

I play an active role in the region’s network of therapists.

For a decade I programmed monthly events for the North West Regional Psychotherapy Association (NWRPA), eventually becoming Chair

For a number of years I also facilitated reading groups for therapists. These enabled a range of topics to be considered in relation to our clinical work

Moving Forward

I now look forward to a second decade of serving the short- and long-term therapy needs of adults in Manchester

Whatever your reason for choosing my service you can have confidence that at Therapy in Manchester you will work with a qualified and experienced therapist committed to his ongoing professional development
